Sizes are the footprint of the stack - width by height. Every load is the same Southern Appalachian hardwood mix, kiln dried the same way.

A 2' x 3' is about 8 hours of fire, and a 2' x 4' about 11. A 4' x 4' is about 21 hours, which will see you through a season if you burn once or twice a month. An 8' x 4' is about 43 hours, a season for most people.

Why kiln dried

The moisture is baked out

That one difference is what everything else follows from: how easily it lights, how much heat it gives back, how little smoke ends up in your face.

7-10% moisture

Wood that is still carrying water spends the first part of every fire boiling it off instead of making heat. Our kiln dried process takes it down to 7-10%, which is why it catches on the first try.

48 hours at 275F

That is what the wood goes through before it leaves the kiln. It is also what kills insects and mold spores, so nothing living comes in with the load and the garage is a fine place to keep it.

Less smoke, less noise

Most of the smoke and the popping from damp wood is water leaving it. Take the water out and you get a quiet, clean, and hot fire you can sit next to.

Oak + hickory mix

Southern Appalachian hardwood, oak and hickory, with cherry, gum and poplar sometimes mixed in. Oak and hickory both put out very high heat and make up the bulk of any load.

About an hour per cubic foot

Burn time scales with how much wood you buy rather than with any one log, so a 21 cubic foot load is roughly 21 hours of fires.

Ready the day it arrives

Seasoned wood is air dried outside over months, and how dry it ends up depends on how long it actually sat. This has already been dried, so there is nothing to wait for.

How an order works

Three decisions, and then we get in touch.

Pick a size

Start with how much firewood you need. As a rough guide:

  • 2' x 3' - about 8 hours of fire
  • 2' x 4' - about 11 hours
  • 4' x 4' - about 21 hours, a season if you burn once or twice a month
  • 8' x 4' - about 43 hours, a season for most people

Add what you need

A rack, stacking and firestarters are checkboxes on the wood card, already sized to the load you picked.

Stacking is separate from delivery: it is the labor of building the stack row by row, with airflow between the pieces, which takes a while on the bigger sizes and is the part most people would rather not do in January.

Delivery and stacking

Two different things

Delivery brings the wood to you. Stacking is the work of putting it away once it is there.

Delivery

Every order is delivered. The cost depends on distance.

  • The load comes off the truck in one pile
  • It goes where you point, not just the end of the driveway
  • We confirm a timeframe with you beforehand
  • Cost depends on how far out you are and shows at checkout

Stacking

Optional, and sized to the load you picked.

  • We build the stack row by row instead of leaving a pile
  • Air can move between the splits, so it stays dry
  • It goes in your rack, or wherever you want the stack
  • It is labor, so it is priced separately from the wood

About me

Hi, I'm Wilson

I've always liked a fire. Ever since I was a kid, I've been enamored with it.

Sitting, talking, playing the guitar, singing, laughing, and making s'mores around a fire pit or getting cozy on a couch beside a fireplace are some of my favorite ways to connect with people.

I'm from southeast Charlotte near Monroe and have lived in the Charlotte area most of my life. My wife and three children help me with various aspects of the business, and you may just get lucky and see one of my kids along for the ride on your delivery.

I have a strong desire to work with the best quality product I can. Kiln dried firewood is simply what I prefer to burn. It catches quickly and keeps going on its own, so the fire is something you enjoy instead of something you tend.

Honesty and integrity carry into everything I do. I want to run a business where people feel valued, are treated well, experience great communication, and can trust the relationship that's formed by working with me.

I'm a Christian and live my life to bring glory to Jesus. Colossians 3:23 shapes how I operate Midnight Firewood - "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men."

What kind of wood is it?

Southern Appalachian hardwood - primarily oak and hickory, with cherry, gum and poplar sometimes mixed in. Oak and hickory put out very high heat; cherry runs a little lower and smells good. Splits are about 16" long and 3" across on average.

How long will a fire last?

Roughly an hour per cubic foot. A 2' x 4' load is about 11 hours of fires, a 4' x 4' about 21.

What does delivery cost?

It depends how far you are from us - some deliveries are free and others carry a charge. You'll see the cost at checkout once you enter your address.

Where do you deliver?

Charlotte and the towns around it - Matthews, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Waxhaw, Weddington, Monroe and more. The full list is on the FAQ page, and if you are just outside it, give us a call.

Do I need to be home?

No. We'll text you an ETA when we're on the way, and send a photo when we leave so you know what turned up and when.

Where will you put it?

The driveway, unless you tell us otherwise. If you add stacking, we'll stack it in your rack or wherever you'd like, as long as we can get a wheelbarrow to it.

Do I need a rack?

No. The wood should go somewhere off the ground, but if you get the stacking add-on and don't have a rack, just let us know where you want it stacked.

How should I store it?

Inside or out. It comes out of the kiln free of bugs and mold spores, which is what makes this wood worth keeping inside. Outside, stack it where air can move between the splits, ideally up off the ground, and keep it covered.
