FAQ
The firewood
What kind of wood is it?
Southern Appalachian hardwood - primarily oak and hickory, with cherry, gum, poplar and other hardwoods mixed into the load. Oak and hickory put out very high heat; cherry runs a little lower and smells good.
What does "kiln dried" actually mean?
The wood is split and then dried in a kiln for 48 hours at 275F, which brings it down to 7-10% moisture content. That's what makes it light quickly and burn cleanly - there's very little water left to boil off before it catches.
How big are the splits?
About 16" long and 3" across on average.
Will it have bugs or mold in it?
No. The kiln process takes care of that, so what shows up at your house is clean. Once it's stored outside on a rack it's exposed to the same weather and bugs as anything else kept outdoors, but that's true of any wood sitting in your yard.
How long will a fire last?
Roughly an hour per cubic foot.
How much to order
What sizes do you sell?
Loads are sold by the size of the stack they make, always width x height.
| Size | Cord fraction |
|---|---|
| 2' x 3' | ~1/16 cord (8 cu ft) |
| 2' x 4' | ~1/12 cord (10.7 cu ft) |
| 4' x 4' | 1/6 cord (21.3 cu ft) |
| 8' x 4' | face cord, 1/3 cord (42.7 cu ft) |
Do you sell a full cord?
I can. Give me a call first if you're interested in that amount of wood and we'll talk through the specifics.
Delivery
Where do you deliver?
The greater Charlotte area in North Carolina. If you're just outside it, give me a call and we'll see whether delivery works for you.
What does delivery cost?
It depends how far you are from me - some deliveries are free and others carry a charge. You'll see the cost at checkout once you enter your address.
How long until I get it?
I try to get to you as soon as I can. Historically that's within 1-3 business days, though life happens and it can occasionally run longer. We'll agree on timing when you order. If you need wood by a specific date, call before you place the order and I'll tell you honestly whether I can make it.
Do I need to be home?
No. I'll text you an ETA when I'm on the way, and I'll always send a photo when I leave so you know exactly when I was on your property and what was delivered.
Where will you put it?
The driveway, unless you tell me otherwise. If you add stacking, I'll stack it in your rack or wherever you'd like, as long as I can get a wheelbarrow to it. Flights of stairs or a long haul to the rack may carry an extra fee - let me know ahead of time and I'll work with you on it.
What if the weather is bad?
I won't deliver in bad weather, so you don't end up with wet wood. If the forecast turns, I'll be in touch with you about it.
Can I pick it up instead of having it delivered?
Yes. Give me a call first and we'll set up a time.
Stacking
Is stacking included?
No, it's a separate add-on. You'll find it on the firewood product page for your size - add it alongside the wood.
How much is it?
$15 for a 2' x 3', $20 for a 2' x 4', $35 for a 4' x 4', and $60 for an 8' x 4'.
Do I need a rack?
No. If you get the stacking add-on and don't have a rack, just let me know where you want it stacked.
Storing it
How should I store it?
Stack it where air can move between the splits, ideally up off the ground, and keep it covered. The racks and covers I sell are built to do exactly that - the cover keeps rain off while air still moves through, so moisture doesn't build up in the stack.
Should I keep it covered?
Yes. Uncovered wood will get wet, and wet wood gives up some of what you paid for with kiln dried. If it does get rained on, give it a day to dry out before you burn it and you'll get less smoke.
Can I store it inside?
Yes. It comes out of the kiln free of bugs and mold spores, which is what makes this wood worth keeping inside.
Racks and firestarters
What racks do you sell?
Woodhaven racks in 2' x 4' and 4' x 4', sized to match the firewood loads. The 8' x 4' listing is two 4' x 4' racks, which is also how you'd hold an 8' x 4' load. They arrive assembled, and a cover is included.
What are the firestarters?
Cedar firestarters - 4" x 1" disks made in the USA from cedar sawdust and refined wax, no residue or harsh chemicals. They light with one match and burn 20 to 30 minutes. Sold in 12, 24, 50, and 100 counts.
How many do I use per fire?
They break apart, and a quarter of a disk is enough for most fires. I usually use a whole one.
